Long term therapeutic care
In 1992, we devised an intensive method of working with the most challenging young people in the country that produced results which hadn’t been seen before. Since then, we have become established as the sector leader in the provision of longer-term therapeutic care for young people. We understand the damage caused to young lives by trauma and abuse and use recognised models of therapeutic intervention to deliver developmental growth and recovery.
Who we work with
Young people who come to Bryn Melyn Care have frequently had their early life experiences compounded by multiple placement breakdowns...
Placements are available to young people between the ages of 10 and 18 whose complex needs are presented in a wide range of self destructive and challenging behaviours. This can often be the last placement before transitioning to adulthood; however we have also been very successful in time specific pieces of work to reintegrate young people to their families or to prepare for foster care.
There are very few reasons why we would not consider placing a young person within our services where consistent care, a stable placement and the addition of a bespoke educational package and specialised relevant therapeutic service is likely to meet their identified needs, through sensitive and effective admission planning.
Why therapeutic care works at Bryn Melyn Care
Our intensive method enables us to respond to young people’s needs in a very deliberate and precise way; this enables us to create remarkable behavioural and emotional changes...
Our principle model involves 1:1 working to provide the safety and support, both physical and emotional, required for change and growth.
Essential to the wellbeing and development of the traumatised child is an environment that provides an integrated approach to care, education and therapy for each young person. All our services aim to achieve coherence between the delivery of these three components to maximise the effectiveness of everything we do. This contributes to the child’s feelings of safety through the establishment of a consistent set of values and expectations.
Integrated therapeutic care includes the delivery of a specific sessional service by our Clinical Services Team which comprises practitioners who are qualified in a range of different approaches. It also means that a great deal of attention is paid to the living environments that we create for young people and clinicians are actively engaged in providing support and guidance to residential staff on a regular basis. Both the physical surroundings, the structures which are provided for daily living and the level of care and consistency delivered by our care teams are vital components of a therapeutic setting.
Our young people live individually, in pairs or (when ready) in threes, in comfortable homes that are very domestic in scale and feel. This allows them much more input in day-to-day decision making and a greater feeling of control over their lives than can be achieved in other settings.
Often for the first time, our young people experience a setting where they are not rejected and where placements do not break down. Boundaries will inevitably be tested. This will be managed and placement stability maintained.
