Pupils are funny for money in support of Comic Relief
Flying grasshoppers, roasted scorpion and giant waterbugs!
Not quite what you’d expect to see served up at a Whitchurch school that’s just won a gold level healthy eating award!! The jungle ‘delicacies’ were all part of a bushtucker trial bravely taken on by Smallbrook School Science teacher, Jonathan Hall, in aid of Comic Relief.
Jon’s gastronomic nightmare began when he was presented with three Flying Grasshoppers. Having made quick work of the bouncing beasties, he moved on to toasted silk worms. A helping of bamboo worms followed 30 seconds later.
Rocking from foot to foot, and murmuring ‘Oh my days’, Jon consumed the roasted scorpion and was then seen to turn a shade of green when faced with a giant water bug! Escargot provided the final course, tackled with real determination!
Pupils cheered Jon through the ordeal and offered him a large bucket and drink of water at the end! Jon’s buggy banquet, and the efforts of pupils and other staff through baking and selling cake and fancy dress entry helped raise £175 for Comic Relief.
Smallbrook School, part of the Bryn Melyn Care Group, achieved a gold level Award under the Shropshire Healthy Eating Award in December last year from Shropshire County Primary Care Trust and the local authorities.
